Remove Sludge from your Pond

If you are not generally motivated to clean the scum from the bottom of your pond, you are not alone. Many pond-owners procrastinate when faced with this task. However, it is essential to your pond’s appearance, and will help you keep the water clean and healthy for those who live in it. At Oklahoma Ponds, we have plenty of experience with this endeavor, and we have a number of tools and tips to make the job easier.

What is Sludge, and why is it bad?

Sludge, or pond scum, is simply a mix of decaying organic matter and whatever dirt you use in your pond (or that might fall into it). The organic material can come from animal waste, dead leaves or twigs, grass clippings, fish food, or anything else that was once alive. The dirt can be silt, sand, clay, or regular soil. Sludge is rich in nutrients, and will typically foster the growth of bacteria and algae.

A small amount of sludge is normal, and no big deal. Over time however, the dirt and organic material that falls into your pond will build up and cover the floor. This can result in several negative consequences for your pond.

In order for the organic material in your pond to decompose, there must be a steady supply of oxygen. The more decaying organic material you have, the more oxygen it will consume. As oxygen levels in your pond decrease, the marine life will suffer. Fish, tadpoles, and other normal residents may begin to die if this process goes unchecked.

Sludge also creates the ideal conditions for anaerobic bacteria to breed. Certain strains of this bacteria produce hydrogen sulfide, a toxic gas that can also harm the ecosystem for your pet fish. Not only that, it also creates a nasty rotten-egg smell. If you have ever been around your pond and noticed such a foul odor, there is an excellent chance that you have let the sludge accumulate for too long.

Sludge Cleaning Strategies for your Pond

If you are looking for ways to remove sludge from your pond, there are three simple solutions. You may find that you will need a combination of these to get the job done.

Beneficial Bacteria

Not all bacteria is harmful for your pond. Many produce beneficial enzymes that will restore water quality and eat away at the sludge and other decaying organic matter. Although this method takes little time to employ, it may require several treatments to be effective. The downside is that it will not have much of an effect if you have let your sludge problem go untreated for too long.

Pond Vacuums

Specially designed for use in ponds, a pond vacuum is an excellent tool for removing sludge and muck from the bottom of your pond. When acquiring one, make sure that you choose the one suitable for your size of pond. Make sure you read the instructions carefully, and follow all safety protocols. You will need to take some care to protect your fish and other marine life.

Given the amount of work sometimes required to handle larger projects and/or protect the features of your pond, you might find it expedient to call a professional pond cleaning service. The right specialist will have insight into the nature of your assignment and be able to choose the appropriate tool for the job. You may find this necessary if the job calls for a specific tool that requires experience to operate. For example, for a larger body of water such as a lake, you might need a submersible pump, or a muck dredge.

Muck Shovels

As simple as it may sound, a shovel might be the fastest way to remove excess sediment and sludge from your pond. A muck shovel is specifically designed to handle such a task, and won’t be expensive. If your pond is relatively small and has a smooth floor, you may find that this is an excellent option.

Preventing Sludge Buildup

The best offense is a good defense. If you can prevent sludge from building up in the first place, then you should be able to avoid an expensive and invasive operation. Use these strategies alone or together to keep your pond pristine.

Skim your Pond Daily

A skimmer net or similar tool is effective for sweeping away organic material from the surface of your pond before it sinks. When your pond is small, this is very helpful, and easy to do. In many cases, you can even grab leaves and twigs from the bottom before they begin to break down.

The best way to accomplish this is to have a regular schedule. If you have fish, and you feed them daily, check the surface of the pond when you do this. If you see anything floating around, remove it. Even in larger ponds and lakes, this chore makes a big difference in water quality.

Put a Barrier Around your Pond

Adding aquatic plants around the edge of your pond can form a natural barrier that prevents leaves, twigs, grass, and other organic material from entering your pond. Even a low 6″ wall will stop many leaves and grass from blowing into your pond. They can also deter racoons or other predators from coming to kill your fish, as they might not be so interested in entering your pond if they feel they cannot climb back out.

Aerate Your Water

With a pump and a waterfall, the water in your pond will cycle and aerate, which makes it hard for unhealthy bacteria to form. This will also prevent sludge buildup by catching the organic material in a trap before cycling the water through. A good filter will also catch contaminants and likewise do much of your work for you.

Keep your Fish Population Manageable

Fish produce organic waste, and the more fish you have, the faster that waste builds up. As sludge increases, the anaerobic bacteria that break it down consume the oxygen, leaving less for the fish. The more fish (or more large fish) you own, the more care you must take in preserving the ecosystem for them. Also – avoid giving your fish too much food, as excess food will also contribute to the development of sludge.

Prevent Sludge with Beneficial Bacteria

Beneficial bacteria is most effective as a preventative measure. If the bacteria is present in large quantities in a clean pond, then your organic matter will break down quickly, preventing a buildup of sludge. And your pond will be rich in oxygen.
